Technology reaches Tomato Sorting

The amount of technology available for tomato sorting and grading has increased to include the use of high resolution cameras. These cameras scan each tomato as it moves through the system. The scan includes multiple layouts of the tomato and results in creating an image that the computer uses to determine the actual diameter of each tomato. This technology increases the ability to sort like sized tomatoes for packing. Less handling of the fruit to determine size decreases the amount of bruising and damage to the meat and skin of the tomato. Damaged fruit is low in value and results in money lost by the producer.
