The capsules of the kidney. The kidney is invested in its own fibrous capsule (capsula fibrosa), a fine smooth lamina intimately attached to the renal substance. Normally it can be separated from the renal substance quite easily. The fibrous capsule consists of three layers: (1) an outer fibrous layer; (2) a middle muscular layer (an incomplete layer of smooth muscle fibres), and (3) an inner supraparechymatous layer.
